Labor Day Adventures

This Labor Day we did something a different than an ordinary picnic or cook-out. Since Dad and the boys were out harvesting corn, Mom suggested that we girls pack a lunch and just go out and walk around the farm. So we did! It was quite fun.

We packed some sandwiches, mint tea, chips, and a couple other things which I can’t remember (XD), and took along backpacks filled with books and cameras.

This is my cucumber sandwich. Say hello.ย I didn’t want to waste the bread crusts after I cut out the sandwich, so I flattened them with aย rolling pin, spread some cream cheese on, and rolled them up into roses. ๐Ÿ˜›

First we headed past a place we call “The Sycamores” because… there are a lot of huge sycamore trees by the creek. DSC_2030 (853x1280)

I found some lovely periwinkle morning glories along the path. Aren’t they charming?

We finally settled on a pretty, peaceful corner of the pasture filled with smartweed –ย a dainty little pink flower. We spread out a blanket, hung the hammock, and relaxed.

I did a really fun, cute photoshoot with my little sister here, but this post would be insanely long if I included all those photos oh wait it already is, so I’ll save it for later. Anyway, this was a great spot for taking pictures of little things. My favorite! ๐Ÿ˜€

Have you ever tasted sourgrass, or wood sorrel? That’s what this is. It tastes, well, sour.

So pretty! โ™ฅ

I found a beautifully shiny, polished nut.

The scenery was more scrubby here than the rest of our farm, but still pretty.

Trees are nice.

After we ate lunch and read for a while, we decided to move to a different spot. We crossed the barbwire fence (no easy feat in this pasture), walked over the field,ย up the hill, down a lane, and up another hill to a beautiful hidden spot behind a pasture. We’d never been there before, which is something rare since we’veย walked pretty much everywhere on our farm,ย and it was delightful to explore it.

Unfortunately I didn’t get many pictures with my camera because it ran out of battery, but Megan lent me hers.

HA HA cows are such funny creatures. XD

I think this picture is so neat but I don’t know why – it’s rather cluttered.

I had the idea to play mancala while we were there. (Have you ever played that? It’s really fun!) I dug out some holes in the dirt with a stick and used corn kernels for the marbles. It actually worked!

It’s really hard to see on camera, but Carmen and I built a great fort around this perfect square of trees. There were huge logsย scatteredย everywhere (one pile was in a huge sinkhole O.o ).ย They made great walls but were exhausting to carry. We didn’t finish the fort, but we did make a good start.

Mom and Carmen and I also built this little campfire area in a pretty shaded nook. We stacked stones for a firepit, hauled in some rocks and stumps for chairs, and made benches from logs and rocks. ๐Ÿ™‚ It was fun.

Mom also found this really odd-looking spider. O.o (She’s for you, Clara. ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

In the evening our whole family came up and had a picnic with us, and a bonfire too.

So that’s what we did for Labor Day! It was great fun, even though the mosquitoes practically devoured me. I got over 40 mosquito bites (yes, I counted XD). O.o Anyway, the memories will last for much longer than the bites will, so it’s all good.

I hope you enjoyed this loooong post, my dears!ย Which was your favorite picture? Which was your least favorite?ย What did you do for Labor Day?

  1. Wow sounds like you had fun!! I love to build forts out of sticks in the woods. ๐Ÿ™‚ One time my brother and I found a spot in our woods where the trees and other vines had grown together to form a house!!
I love it when you post pictures! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thanks, Gracie! Yes, it was! Hee hee, thanks. Ooh yes, I love that one too! I know, the spider was really strange – I’m not sure what kind it is though. Yeah! Hee hee.
Thanks for the comment, Gracie! I’m afraid my reply was kind of choppy. XD

  2. It looks like you had a really fun day! Woodland places are so lovely, aren’t they? The fort you built looks great–many years ago CutePolarBear and I made “houses” outside with sticks and such. They still exist, but they’re a little overgrown. XP
That’s too bad that you got so many mosquito bites. :/ That often happens to me when we go places. You need more frogs and toads around your property. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh no, I didn’t! Thanks for the tip! Sometimes I just smack the bites instead of itching them because it kind of numbs them a bit. XD Did you know that jewelweed is supposed to relieve poison ivy? I’ve never tried it, but I’ve found jewelweed under a powerline and it’s really pretty too. ๐Ÿ™‚

          1. You’re welcome! It works best if you get a lot of the juices out of the leaves. You might be surprised how quickly bites stop itching!
Yes, I did know that about jewelweed, but I’ve never tried it. I don’t get poison ivy that often, though when I do, it’s really annoying. You’re right, jewelweed is a pretty plant! ๐Ÿ™‚

            1. Huh, well I’ll certainly have to try that! That’s great! We have plenty of plantain leaves, thankfully. (You mean the weed plantain, not the fruit, right?)

Ooh, I HATE mosquitos. That’s quite impressive! Once my friend told me that toothpaste helped mosquito bites and I immediately slathered myself with toothpaste. XD That spider is..well…strange. XD

    1. We did! And thanks! Megan and I decided to make ourselves something a little more special. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Yes, we do have a pretty big farm, for this area, anyway. My favorite part… hmm, that’s so hard! Let me think. Well, I really like this one pond that has lots of quartz crystals around it, and I like the Sycamores, and a certain path through the woods over the hill, and on top of that hill, and… well, lots of places! ๐Ÿ˜€ But yeah, those are a few of my favorites. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Ooh, I loved this post! It looks like you had a great Labor Day, and you got a lot of great photos! That spider is so weird. XD My favorite picture is this one:

    SO PRETTY!

As for my least favorite… hmm. Maybe this one:

It just isn’t horribly interesting, I guess. ๐Ÿ˜› Anyways, I hope my feedback helped!

We didn’t really do anything exciting for Labor Day, but I did take school off and worked on my Wreck This Journal, so that was fun. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Thank you sooo much, Clara! Ha ha, I know, right? Strange. YES! That might be my favorite too! And thanks so much for telling me your least favorite. It’s funny though because I think someone else mentioned that as one of their favorites. XD Anyway, yeah, I don’t like that one as good as some because I used Megan’s camera instead of mine. Heh heh. XD
Ooh, that sounds fun! Do you think you’ll post about your Wreck This Journal? I’d love to see it!
Thanks again for your comment, Clara!

  6. Wow, what fun! I loved all the photos, but especially the one of the little pink flowers! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Well, for Labor Day, my family spent it driving like, 11-12 hours driving to Oregon! Ha-ha! We had the best trip, and I wrote an account of each day I’ll be sharing with friend soon so you’ll get to read it! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m glad you had a great time hiking and the bonfire, although 40 mosquito bites??? I puff up badly from those and 40 would make me look like a itchy, red balloon! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Eek!

Yeah, ha ha. XD They don’t really make me puff up, thankfully, but if I rub against something they sure do itch. Fortunately they’re mostly gone now. ๐Ÿ™‚
