Christmas Tree Day {2021}

Hello, my friends!

It’s time for the annual “finding + cutting + decorating our Christmas tree” post! This is my favorite tree yet, so I’m especially excited to show you the pictures this year.

Enjoy some cozy, Christmas-y photos and a day in the life of my family. 🙂

Now that we don’t have our Yukon, we had to either take two cars or squish into the truck. After a short trip to a tree farm that was sold out, we found another place to try and all rode together. The inside of the truck was… a little crammed. But it was all good.

We went to the same tree farm as last year. Looking at this picture makes me realize how very much our family likes jeans. Heh. Also the bottom picture is… definitely a candid one, but that’s the only one I got of everyone facing toward me, so we’ll go with it.

We found a tree SO FAST. Carmen noticed this one down the hill, we went there to look at it, and it was perfect! Of course I had to take the classic “Logan holding the tree while Dad cuts it down” picture. Logan kinda disappeared in the second picture, oops.

WE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THIS ONE. Look how cuuuute! Carmen and I were thrilled at the adorable, chubby shape of this tree. I love this picture. 🙂

We made a couple of stops on the way back: a local farmer’s market to see a friend who had a booth there (and Megan bought tasty homemade candy!), and then to a local restaurant for lunch. They served buttered popcorn for an appetizer, which was fun for different.

We finally made it home with the Christmas tree. Now for the setting up! Can you spot Mom’s hand making a guest appearance in this photo?

This is always the tricky part of putting up the tree – making sure it stands up straight. The process involves many people – several boys for adjusting the screws, and several girls for giving feedback on the angle. “That’s pretty good… no wait, bring it more toward the big window. That’s too far… now… okay, there. Perfect!”

I just realized that the tip of the Christmas tree along with Logan’s hand almost perfectly aligns with the corners of the ceiling and wall in this picture. Unintentionally nice composition.

This scene looked really neat in real life because the light from the smaller window made the netting in Jeff’s hand glow. 🙂

The tag on the Christmas tree said it was 9-10 feet, but at home, we used Jeff as a measuring stick. Because my little brother is 16 years old and 6’4″ tall. O.o

Here’s my dad happily styling some fashionable antler-and-poinsettia headwear. This picture makes me smile.

Now for decorating the tree! Mom and Dad hung the lights and Logan adjusted them.

The kids were finally old enough to all help hang the glass ornaments this year! Woohoo!

Dad’s always the ornament-hander-outer. I love this part of getting a Christmas tree – recounting the memories associated with different ornaments, handing out the proper ornaments to the proper owners, and laughing at the homemade kids’ ornaments from the past.

I can see the tree from where I sit right now – I decided to work on this post downstairs by the fire instead of my cold studio tonight. So anyway, what I was going to say was that the ornaments are nice and spread-out on the tree this year. It looks lovely.

And here’s the finished result (with a few gifts under it already)! The tree dwarfs the armchair beside it, my goodness.

Let’s end on a nice closer-upper picture. This is my lockscreen for my phone currently. 🙂 I love how cozy and pretty Christmas trees make the house feel.

  3. These pictures were absolutely gorgeous! And that tree, such a good find! I love this season of the year, so much family and good times guaranteed to be in the memory book next year! My grandma is actually allergic to real Christmas trees so I’ve actually never had the pleasure of going to a farm and cutting one down ourselves, however we have three Christmas trees this year and they are all lovely with different colored lights and different places around the Hause as their holiday residings! Such a fun post!

  6. Allison! What a spectacular Christmas tree! Those final shots of the tree all dressed up for the Holiday are beautiful! And your pictorial recording of the process from start to finish is very well done, such fine shots capturing the moment each step of the way! Great job and you’re off to a wonderful start to enjoying Christmas with the family!

  12. Hello Allison, I don’t know if you remember me, but awhile back I asked you about your camera and what cameras you would recommend. Well, I decided to try a Nikon D3400 and I’m currently in the process of purchasing one. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for this specific camera and also what lens you would recommend me buying!

    1. YAY! It makes me so happy to hear that you’re going for a DSLR! I recommend looking up YouTube tutorials or blog articles for the basics once you receive your camera – start by learning about three things: ISO, aperture (or f-stop), and shutter speed. Once you understand those, play around with the manual mode on your camera to get a feel for how they actually work. Take it slow and have fun with it! DSLRs can be really overwhelming and confusing at first, but I promise it will get to be second-nature with time if you keep practicing. 🙂
      For a lens, I recommend the 35mm. That’s what I use for 95% of my photos as it’s super versatile!
