Hand Lettering Inspiration {Recent Bible Journaling}

It’s time for another word art post! I just finished another Bible journal, which means I filled up another notebook with favorite verses. I’m currently going through the Bible one chapter at a time and copying down my favorite verse from each chapter in a notebook. The idea is to write them out in pretty lettering so I’ll have a beautiful collection at the end, but sometimes the lettering is… well, legible and that’s it. 😛 I love how a lot of these turned out, though.

Let’s start with the first verse in the notebook: this beautiful one from Isaiah 50. I like adding simple doodles or drawings to ordinary lettering like this.

I switched pens. 😉 I like this darker ink/broader tip better. Also this verse is simultaneously extremely comforting and extremely convicting. Help.

One of my favorite passages which deserves much better lettering, but I guess I kept it simple to fit everything on the page. Ah, I just love these verses.

Lettering or drawing doesn’t need to be fancy at ALL to still be decently nice to look out.

I usually don’t recommend adding this many fonts to one page because it looks chaotic and cluttered… but sometimes I kinda want that style. And it’s fun to write. 🙂

The problem of humanity in one verse…. I like writing the font in such a way that it helps carry across the meaning of the word I use it for, like I did for “separation” here.

Ooh, I like the layout of this one! It’s fun to make the words a part of the picture.

Or here’s another way to do it! I don’t normally this elaborate of artwork (relatively speaking) for my lettering, but I like how it turned out.

This lettering is pretty boring but I’m mainly posting this for the verse because ah.

Another super easy art + font combo. Simple capital letters with a scribbly little drawing that somehow looks okay because of its simplicity. It’s minimalism, right? 😛

I try not to write verses out of context, but sometimes short, unexplained phrases like this are powerful in themselves, you know?

Another one I’m just posting for the verse. The writing is messy, but oh my, isn’t this so good? It’s true for so much of the world… and for Christians – for me! – all too often as well.

Again, you don’t have to enjoy pretty handwriting to keep a Bible journal like this! Just regular is fine.

The return of the dark pen. 🙂 This one is also a little messy, but I love “your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name.” ❤

It’s a little shocking how many verses crying out for vengeance like this the Bible contains. We all inherently long for justice because we are made in the image of a just God. But thanks be to Christ, he’s not only just but gracious and merciful, a God who offers us life through him instead of the death and punishment we justly deserve! And somehow I can believe all that and still beg for justice for others while pleading mercy for myself…

If we believe in a Creator who made everything, knows everything, and sees every human heart; why does it surprise us that his plan for the world doesn’t make sense to us who only imitate his creation, know so little, and cannot even see our own hearts clearly? Why are we confused when what seems right to God doesn’t seem right to us? Of course the story we’re living won’t always make sense. We’re in it, and he’s writing it! He knows the end, he’s going to get us there, and he’s with us in the middle. ❤

Speaking of that… I bet Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most taken-out-of-context verses in the Bible, hehe. If you read the chapter vs. 11 comes from, it’s clear that God’s plans for us are not to give us a life free of hardship, but to give us himself despite hardship. Even if his plan involves exile, it is for our good. That’s a powerful promise.

Straightforwardly comforting. ❤ Also I like the lettering here! I feel like it’s easier to make nice layouts with shorter verses.

This is one of my favorite ways to make handlettering look fancy without using a fancy font or anything. Draw some wavy lines and fill them in with capital letters!

Ooh I love how this turned out! I think writing words inside pictures may be one of my favorite techniques.

Another of my favorite verses! I like the balance of black and white in this piece. It needs more black on the bottom, but still. I like this one. ❤

And the last page/verse for this Bible journal! It seemed like a fitting verse to end on after going through Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Lamentations.

There, that was fun! I hope you guys found these verses encouraging and/or enjoyed the hand lettering inspiration. I’ve been filling journals this way for years and I’m past halfway finished so far, so that’s exciting!

  8. Wow Allison, this is such a wonderful way of bible journaling 🌷.
    I know you’ve said that using too many fonts may not be a good idea, but I do like your page on Isaiah 55:8-9 … beautifully written and equally great verses.
    But my favourite: Definitely Jeremiah 29:11. I’ve recently bought a journal and that very same verse is on the front … “For I know the plans I have for you” … for me, that is a wonderful promise.
    I’m busy doing a bible study about the Book of Esther and your post gave me a wonderful idea what I can do with my new journal after finishing my study 🌸.

  13. I really like the idea of doing this, but I can’t imagine my lettering would turn out very well. Maybe, I’d experiment with the wavy line idea. I really like the Isaiah verse. I think it came out really well even though it was long and, perhaps, hard to fit into the page. And, yes, I love the sheep. I like sheep and their Bible significance. 🙂

  16. Ah! All these verses are so meaningful.  The one that struck me most was the first:  Isaiah 50:10, considering the waves of darkness and depression I have experienced this year.  Jeremiah 1:7-8 was a good reminder too—and Isaiah 62:3…

    Isaia 53:4-6 reminds me of a beautiful piece composed by George Frideric Handel for his oratorio Messiah.  He composes three pieces for these verses, actually, but “All We Like Sheep” is the most sobering and really captures the gravity of the text.  I most certainly recommend listening to it, if you haven’t already.  The recording by the Dunedin Consort is a good one.  You can find it on YouTube Music, I believe.

  29. Isaiah 51:12-13 Was just one of the Bible Verses that I loved! You are really getting the Lord’s word out and I am proud of you! My dad was a Baptist Pastor for 50 years and even to his last breathes this month, he died and went to heaven June 13, 2021 of liver cancer, he was whispering a question to any one that visited, “Do you have Jesus in your heart?” We had talked about me going through the book of Isaiah and asking him questions, but he became to ill for this to happen. I want to start including a verse each time I post and you inspired me!! Have a beautiful day :)Jen

  31. What a great idea. I’ve been writing out word for word chapters at a time in a notebook just to preserve the word in my head. They say writing it down puts it to memory better than just reading the Word. I fear for what will come of God’s Word in our nation in the days ahead. But, have no fear, right? We know how the story ends. I am praying for courage. Thank you Allison!

  32. My favorite is Lamentations 5:22-23!! 🙂 that verse keeps popping up in my life. I think the Lord is trying to remind me of His never ending mercies! Great is His Faithfulness!
