A Foggy Beach Photoshoot {Road Trip Travel Journal, Pt. 3}

Hello, my friends!

This next part in my vacation series comprises a bunch of photos I took at a rather chilly beach in Galveston, Texas. When you think of beaches, you think of sun and warmth, but as we went in February, this one was more… foggy and cold. Hehe. It was a little disappointing but also neat because I’ve never been to a beach in the fog before. And I love fog. At least it made for some neat, eerie-looking photos!

Enjoy some aesthetic, gloomy ocean photography! 🙂

Since we reached this campground before too late, we decided to go out and explore the beach before supper. Only… it was so foggy we couldn’t exactly tell how to get there.

It felt a little eerie, walking around this muddy, deserted plot in the fog. But the pictures were worth it. 😉

An lonely, ominous-looking palm tree beside an abandoned parking lot…

Now for something more cheerful, like this cute little yellow flower Megan found in the sand.

DSC_5288

We finally found the beach! The water was freezing, but of course Carmen raced right in anyway. 😛

DSC_5291

Even though the atmosphere was kinda gloomy, I was thrilled just to be at a beach. I love beaches!

DSC_5292

Cameras, like guns, have the power to stop a bird in mid-flight. I prefer this kind of shooting. 😉

DSC_5293

I’m never quite sure if the bubbles on ocean shores are gross or pretty… but these were rainbow-colored, so I’ll go for the latter.

DSC_5298

One of my favorite things to do at beaches is to collect shells. It’s always such a fun treasure hunt! Most of the shells on this beach were in fragments, but I found a few whole or nearly-whole ones like this little beauty.

DSC_5301

Waves and fire are two things I could watch forever… always moving but never going anywhere. So fascinating.

DSC_5303

Isn’t the ombre effect in this one lovely?

DSC_5304

Here’s Carmen feeling cold after she dunked under all the way. 😛

DSC_5307

I barely managed to catch these geese or birds before they flew past, but I’m so glad I did. Fog just makes everything look haunting and full of stories, doesn’t it?

DSC_5316

While I looked for shells and took pictures, my siblings were hard at work building a sand fortress.

DSC_5323

Here it is, near completion. Logan probably worked on it the most, which may be why it was so well-built and was still there the next day. 😛

DSC_5329

I love this one. Isn’t it neat how the composition of a photo completely changes your perspective?

DSC_5314

When Jeff wasn’t helping construct the sandcastle, he was writing his name in the sand, HAHA.

DSC_5325

Eventually the light dimmed, our hair was wet with fog and ocean spray, and we were ready to go back for supper and warmth. So we that’s what we did. Logan came a little later because he wanted to work on the sandcastle more first. 🙂

DSC_5330

I love this picture too. ❤ It looks like my siblings are all holding hands but they’re not, heh. They’re just walking very in-sync, I suppose.

DSC_5333

Doesn’t the campground look strange but aesthetic here? Ahh.

DSC_5337

These palm trees made spectacular silhouettes among the clouds.

DSC_5338

Doesn’t this one look like an old movie?

DSC_5344

I had fun editing these poorly-lit photos with some vintage-style filters. 😀 Somehow it just fits.

DSC_5341

This last picture is one of my favorites from the post, despite its graininess. We had just arrived back at the camper and lined up to rinse the sand off our feet before going inside. I love the way the warm light glowing from the window contrasts with the cool, solemn palm trees and still atmosphere. I think the best photos are those that capture not only the way something looked, but how it felt, too.

DSC_5342

*happy sigh* Beaches… That was so fun. 😀 Anyway, there’s your third installment of our vacation, guys! If you haven’t already done so, feel free to check out the first part here and second part here. I’ll be back with my next and probably last part next week: exploring New Orleans! Until then…

Which photo(s) did you like best? Would you build a sandcastle, write your name in the sand, collect shells, or get drenched in ocean water?

Thanks so much for reading, my friends, and have a lovely day!

  1. This beach-foggyness reminds me of a brief vacation I spent on the west side of Vancover Island, here in Canada. It was August then, and that month is so foggy the locals call it Fogust. 🙂 Your photos really capture that damp ocean fog that I remember.

The picture of the gulls flying through the fog is definitely one of my favourites!

  4. Those are great photos! It’s sooo weird to see the beach in Galveston so gloomy and cold!! I agree with you about the last photo. The cool colors contrasting with the warm light inside really makes an impact. Very nice.

  5. These were amazing photos! I can’t choose which is my favourite, since they were all unique and had thir own touch. I actually can’t choose which I would want to do because I’ve done them all. I have even been bitten by jelly fish before!

      1. You’re welcome!
Well, it wasn’t that painful. We had taken some kind of oil from the life guard and applied it where I was bitten. When I touched it or when it touched something else, it hurt. I guess it also depends on the type of jellyfish. I got lucky it wasn’t anything bad. The only problem was, we were on a beach resort for my birthday, so I couldn’t go in the water because there is salt. The pool was fine though…

  6. Wow, these are so awesome, Allison!! AHAHA, I’ve gone to a beach before and written my name huge in the sand 😂 And then the tide came in and washed away my masterpiece 🤔 Anyway lol I totally agree that the last picture is AWESOME, the warm and cool colors together are amazing!

  7. Ah, these were so beautiful!!! I loved that “lonely, ominous palm tree” you had at the beginning! 😍 The fog was gorgeous and I love how it made everything look so mysterious! (And those bubbles were so pretty!) I loved seeing all of these pictures–they were amazing, as usual!

  8. Beautiful photos Allison! I love the beach very much, rain, shine, clouds and mist. But my favorite is a warm sunny tropical beach 😊 I loved your photos and they give me great ideas for my next beach visit!

  9. Allison, I really enjoyed this post and am glad to catch up with you! These pictures are amazing; and yes, perspectives change so much. The gloom gave them their glory actually. Having lived in my camper for 4 years prior to buying my little home in December, I can relate so well to your experiences and images. Stay safe and blessed!

  11. Even with the fog it looked like so much fun! I love beaches too, I’d probably do all the things you listed – except dunk all the way under if it was freezing, haha! 😀 When we visited the beach in Oregon it was super foggy and chilly that day and felt just like you described! I found a whole clam or oyster shell still holding together while I was there, I think I left it in my garden in Idaho though, hehe. Looking forward to part 4! 😀

  13. Gee, your photos are fabulous. Send them to National Geographic. You need an exhibit.

  14. Hi there Allison. First time here and must admit, the word “beach” attracted me to visit your your blog (we love to take long walks on the beach here close to our home) and then … then I saw your beautiful photo’s!
Wow, you’ve managed to capture not just the beauty of a foggy beach, but also the joy of everyone being there ☺️. I’ll come back for more visits, that’s for sure!
