Stars & Snowflakes

Hello, my friends!

Today I have a somewhat incongruous collection of photos for you, hehe. I did a little more star photography the other night, and also got some macro snowflake pictures on one of our many recent snows! Instead of making two tiny posts, I decided to smush the photoshoots together for your enjoyment. ๐Ÿ™‚ Have fun snow/stargazing!

Let’s start with some snowflakes. These were tricky since the snow mostly came down half-melted or in big clusters that day, but I did get a few good shots out of… I don’t remember. A hundred or more, probably!

To take snowflake pictures, you will need a macro lens (like the inexpensive one I use here); a dark, fuzzy hat/scarf/blanket; steady hands or a tripod; and LOTS of patience. ๐Ÿ˜€

I recommend using a soft hat or something similar to collect the snowflakes since the less surface area the ice touches, the more slowly it will melt. So fuzz is good. I laid out two hats in the yard and stood very still for a very long time. :’D

This is not the most comfortable type of photoshoot to do, but it’s so exciting, for me at least, because you never know when the perfect snowflake will fall right in front of you and you’ll get to capture an intricate little piece of art!

This is definitely one of my favorites. I overlapped two separate photos here so more of the snowflake would be in focus – that’s the annoying thing about macro lenses: they have an extremely shallow depth of field, which means it’s hard to keep your whole subject sharp and clear. But it worked! You can even see the tiny waterdrops where it’s starting to melt away…

Iย think this was taken the same day as the macro photos…? We’ve gotten so much snow and ice here lately that it all runs together… Anyway, it sure was snowy!

Dad’s truck stands out nicely in the snow, doesn’t it? The good ol’ (well, new-ish) red truck.

DSC_4379

Here’s an indoor snowy picture, if that’s a thing. Hehe. I love watching snow fall from the big, old windows in our farmhouse like this one in our dining room.

Now for the stars! They were so clear the other night that I couldn’t resist taking a few photos! Sadly, I forgot I still had my 50mm lens on the camera so they didn’t turn out as well as the ones in this post… Oh well. Can you make out the Orion constellation in this (slightly blurry) photo?

DSC_4532

You couldn’t see the Milky Way very well that night, so the most interesting way to photograph the stars ended up being with part of the house in the picture. Something about the bare trees and black and white filter makes this one look kinda creepy to me. O.o

DSC_4534

Guys, look how colorful the stars are! If you zoom in it looks like slightly out-of-focus confetti!

DSC_4537

It’s pretty fun to take photos outdoors at night in general! For that to work, you definitely need a long exposure (several seconds) and a tripod. My hands don’t shake much, but they’re not THAT steady. XD

DSC_4531

This last photo isn’t a star picture but just a night picture. I love the soft, cozy, somewhat abstract aesthetic of this one. It feels like quiet and peace and home. A light in the window. โค

That’s all I have for today, guys! I hope you enjoyed these chilly photoshoots, and that you’re keeping warm and safe. It’s been super icy here lately, but I’m excited because we’re going on a road trip down south soon! Yay! I will most definitely make a post on that when we get back. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Until then…

Snowflakes or stars? Is the weather crazy where you live right now too?

Thanks so much for reading, my friends, and have a lovely day!

  4. Both the stars and snowflakes are soooo beautiful! I saw the Orion constellation, though it was kind of hard to make out where. There is no crazy weather here, spring is already back. Well actually, Zero flowers are blooming and it is so hot and sunny it could be summmer. I live in Dubai which is a desert and a big city, so I hardly ever see stars shining bright, let alone snowflakes.

    1. I know, aren’t they?? Yayyy, good for you for finding Orion! Yeah, it’s harder to see in pictures than in real life. Whoaaa, it would be so different to live in a desert! That’s crazy.

      1. My boyfriend painted that last picture of yours. I tried to attached it, but I realised it’s not possible. Can I send you a picture of the painting on Instagram or any other way that suits you?
