Bible Journaling {Psalms}

Hello, dears!

Almost every night I read a chapter of the Bible and copy down my favorite verse in a little notebook. I’ve been doing this for years while reading through the Bible a second time, and I’m happy to say I recently completed the book of Psalms! I thought I’d post a selection of my favorite verses and lettering pieces today. 🙂

The book of Psalms is filled with deep emotions,  rich prayers, and beautiful hymns, and I’ve enjoyed capturing bits of them to easily look back on later. Let’s get started!

We’ll be looking at portions from three of my journals today. I’m going to write my thoughts on each verse as we go. Obviously I’m not a Bible scholar, I can’t read Greek, and I’m not all-knowing. (Tell me if you find a human who is. XD) I want to share what I believe, but please read and study the Bible for yourselves instead of taking my word for it!

Psalms (3)

A good verse to start with, wouldn’t you say? I know I could use a little more delight in my thinking about and reading the Scriptures…

Psalms (4)

I love how the Bible uses “light” as a metaphor for God throughout the Bible. Light is so central to our life as humans, and so is God, whether we shut our eyes to him or not. Just as we need light to see our surroundings, so we need God’s Spirit to bring to light our sin and the darkness of our desires, that we may know our need of a Savior.

Psalms (6)

This is a sobering prayer, but realizing I won’t live forever really helps me put things into perspective. Some things aren’t worth hassling over because they simply won’t matter at the end of this life – and somethings are worth wrestling with because nothing else will matter more.

Psalms (10)

This reminds me of one of the first songs I heard on a Christian radio station we used to listen to: “Waterfall” by Chris Tomlin. I’m not a huge fan of that artist in general, but the song seems nostalgic to me. 🙂

Psalms (11)

It’s sometimes hard for me to believe there is literally no human being who is “good enough”… until I read the Bible and begin to realize just how holy and perfect God is, and just how sinful I am. It’s only then that I can truly appreciate and worship my Savior, when I recognize my need to be saved from God’s righteous wrath against me.

Psalms (13)

But the good news is that, while I was yet rebelling against him, God DID save me! And now I can trust him with my worries, my anxieties, my life, as this verse says so beautifully.

Psalms (14)

How comforting is it to know that God’s steadfast love is stronger than a fortress around us? (And definitely stronger than the castle I drew under the verse… XD)

Psalms (16)

God is our Noah’s ark. When the lowlands are flooding and our head is going under, he lifts us up and sets us on high ground.

Psalms (17)

“In the shadow of your wings” is such a tender picture to describe God’s protection of his people.

Psalms (18)

What a beautiful way of describing sunrises and sunsets! So true, isn’t it?

Psalms (19)

We have a hope beyond this world and this life, and we have a God beyond our troubles, shaping us and growing us through them, that all things might work together for our good.

Psalms (20)

What unfathomable love! God takes away our sins to infinity (and beyond XD)!

Psalms (21)

This verse is so encouraging! If God can rule the waves that are untamed by any feat of man, he can tame the storm in your life.

Psalms (22)

My family and I memorized this verse and a couple surrounding it over the course of several morning devotions. It’s a great one to remember and apply to, for instance, what you scroll through on your phone every day.

Psalms (24)

Okay, I love this one. ❤ Having lived in a beautiful valley sheltered by mountains, I can totally relate to the idea of being comfortably surrounded. Mountains seem so steadfast and protective and sheltering – and so is God.

Psalms (25)

You’ve probably heard this one before, especially if you or a family you know has a lot of kids. 😉

Psalms (26)

I love this verse! If the Lord gave us what we deserved, we couldn’t even stand before him. But he has forgiven us and taken our sins as far as the east is from the west, that we might revere and love him and stand -stand!- in awe of him.

Psalms (27)

This verse is hard for me, because I enjoy deep thinking and deep conversations. Those are totally fine, but sometimes they gives me the impression that if I just think hard enough, I can figure it out or know it all. Deuteronomy 29:29 says “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us…” Some things are mysteries to all but God, and I need to trust his knowledge rather than my own.

Psalms (28)

I often have trouble thinking of “new ways” to praise God beyond “Wow, God, you’re amazing.” The book of Psalms is filled with all sorts of descriptions like this verse: hymns and prayers of praise that help put your reverence into words or instill a reverence you might be lacking.

Psalms (29)

This is one of my favorite Bible verses, and my earnest prayer.

Psalms (30)

Don’t you feel this way when you look at the stars and imagine all the galaxies God has created, and then realize that he created you, and even more, he saved you by sending his only Son to take the punishment you deserve? I am a speck! And yet I am beloved of the Creator of the universe.

Psalms (31)

God not only loves his people, he takes pleasure in them – he likes them!

Psalms (1)

This seemed like a good verse to end with. Praise the Lord, I read the whole book! 😀

Psalms (2)

It was a lot of fun to go back through my favorite verses. If you’re looking for a way to interact with God’s Word, I definitely recommend this! Even if you aren’t “artistic” or don’t like lettering, you can simply write down your favorite verse in normal handwriting so you can come back to them later and see what stuck out to you. This is also great if you’re hesitant to underline a lot of things in your Bible, like me. XD

  7. I love your handlettering! And I really liked the way you shared your thoughts on each verse, that was nice. I have a Bible journal but I haven’t used it yet, because I don’t have the right pens yet.

  13. Beautiful lettering, and I love that you’re seeking God in the way He’s gifted you! What’s great is no matter how much we disagree, we’ll all end up with the same full understanding someday as we continue to seek God!

    I was just curious, how did you learn to do that lettering. I can write in cursive but are there lettering charts you used to learn how to do the other fonts? I’d love to learn how to do it for my journal!

    1. Thanks so much, Laura!
      Good question! Honestly I mostly make up my own fonts, just playing around with different ways of manipulating letters. A good place to start is writing out letters in print, and then thickening them, adding curls or “serif lines,” etc. You can search “hand lettering” on my blog to find more posts that might help!

  20. What a wonderful idea and of course you have made it look so easy and successful! It is important to slow down and “do art”, meaning “to live artfully”, meditatively, prayerfully as we contemplate God’s truths. All of life, actually. All to often, I am herded by the presses of each day. Thank you for inspiring me to take the time to do this again. I will be reading more of your posts. (Excellent photography, too!)

    1. Aww, thank you! To be honest, though, it’s certainly not always easy. But you can make it a lot easier by simply writing down the verses instead of doing fancy lettering. 😉 Thank you so much for the comment, and I’m glad I could inspire you!
