A Day in the Life…

Hello, dears!

“Day in the life” posts are so fun to read, aren’t they? Since I enjoy reading them, I thought I’d better get on it and make one myself. ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Instead of documenting an actual entire day, I reconstructed what a normal day looks like for me. Well, okay… many days I’ll do errands, go to church-related events, get together with friends, etc. but this is what I usually do on “stay at home days.” ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you guys enjoy!

My day starts about 6:40 a.m. with the frantic ringing of Megan’s alarm clock. I usually propel myself out of bed immediately afterward so as not to accidentally fall asleep until Mom calls breakfast, which would mean doing the breakfast dishes by myself. ๐Ÿ˜›

day 2

I do my morning chores rather sleepily, since I’m not much of a morning person, as you can tell by my dazed expression in the picture below. ๐Ÿ˜›

Ever wondered what my beauty routine was? Well here you go: 1) Change into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. 2) Rinse face and retainers with water. 3) Smooth hair with shea butter gel. Ta-daa. Now you see why I’ve never done a whole post about it. XD

day 1

Breakfast usually features eggs, grits, or pancakes, but it varies. After the meal, Dad reads one of Charles Spurgeon’s devotionals and we discuss it briefly before prayer. Last but not least, we work on whatever Bible verses we’re memorizing currently and get the scoop on the plans for the day. Then Mom and I take care of the dishes and I finish my other morning chores, such as cleaning whatever area of the house I’m assigned to at the moment and feeding the rabbits if it’s my turn.

Then the day really begins! I try to do my Etsy work in the mornings: creating new products or art for my shop, packaging and shipping orders or painting custom ones, making social media posts, etc. I usually listen to sermons or music while I work to give my brain something to do as well as my hands. ๐Ÿ˜›

day 5

My mornings are also used for replying to emails, reading posts or books, snacking on dried fruit, working in the garden, or starting on a post, depending on the day. I basically spend the morning in my studio, which I still love so much. โค

day 4

Eventually I’ll check my watch and see that it’s a little after 12:00, at which I sigh and start thinking about wrapping up my project. My parents make breakfast, and either Megan or I make supper, but for lunch, you’re on your own. So when I look again and it’s nearly 1:00, I hurry downstairs on the faint hope that there will still be a decent amount of readily available food for me after everyone else has eaten. There usually isn’t. ๐Ÿ˜› So I just kind of wander around the kitchen, eating some leftovers here, a slice of cheese there, an orange from the fruit bowl, etc. until I feel somewhat filled. :’D

day 6

When that’s over with, I go back to my studio again to finish whatever project lunch interrupted. Alternatively, I actually needed a break, which I continue by reading or playing piano or something else relaxing, trying to give myself a time limit so I don’t stay there forever.

If we have a hay order to fill in the afternoon, the girls drive down to the barn after lunch to help our brothers with rebaling (my other part time job ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).ย  Megan and I take turns running the booth or stacking bales into the trailer as the round bales are ground up and reshaped into small, square ones. We often get an order for a semi-trailer load of hay (about 600 small bales), which takes us 2ยฝ – 4 hours, depending on how often the baler breaks down and my brothers have to fix it. ๐Ÿ˜› When there’s a long pause, I bring out a book to read. Megan usually writes letters instead. ๐Ÿ˜‰

day 2

After baling, I might take a shower, try to finish up a post, reply to emails, and/or bake some bread or dessert if we’re out. Making dessert is okay, but I love baking bread! It’s so rewarding to pull four delicious loaves out of the oven after hours of work.

day 11

By then, it’s around 6:00 in the evening:,Megan’s done with supper, and the boys and Dad are in. (Megan has mostly swapped any of her baking responsibilities for my cooking ones, which is good by me! XD) Supper is our main meal, and whoever makes it tries to make enough food to last as leftovers for lunch the next day, but… with four hungry teenagers, anything edible just seems to vaporize. :’D

After supper… well, it just depends. Sometimes I work on a letter to a pen pal, email with friends, read, make some art for fun, play piano, or just hang out with my family. Evenings are good times for non-normal-day events like having company over or going to Bible Study.

day 10

I also try to read a few pages of whatever Great Book I’m working on.ย  I don’t think I’ll go to college since I don’t plan to take a vocation that needs a degree, and therefore don’t want to pay a ridiculous amount for something I won’t use. I figured I could learn a lot, however, just by reading through my dad’s set of 60 Great Books, a.k.a a selection of philosophy, history, literature, religion, etc. from authors who changed the world.

day 9

So far I’ve read Homer’s Illiadย and The Odyssey, several Ancient Greek plays (which were rather strange), and I’m working on John Calvin’s The Institutes of Christian Religion. It’s a good, thorough book, but rather slow going. O.o

day 7

Somewhere after 10:00, I’ll wrap up whatever I’m doing and get ready for bed. This includes various kinds of journaling; doing my devotions/reading a chapter of the Bible; and working on Romans, which I’m memorizing with my friend Aria.

day 8

My “evening beauty routine” is even MORE complicated than my morning one! *gasp* After my shower, I work some shea butter into the tips of my wet hair and scrunch it dry with a towel. For some reason my hair is much flatter and straighter if I go to bed with it dry, so I always take my showers in the evening.

By then it’s about 11:00, so I go to sleep. (No! Really?)

And there you have it! A day in the life of Allison. ๐Ÿ™‚

**************************

I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed writing it! It was quite fun to put together.

Do you like these types of posts? What does your day look like? Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Thanks so much for reading, dears, and have a lovely day!

  1. Yay! Iโ€™ve been looking forward to this post! Iโ€™m so glad you did it, it was so fun to see what your daily life is like! ๐Ÿ˜Š What art project are you currently working on in your studio? What are you memorizing? Thatโ€™s a great idea! Do you think you will do a post later this week or next week on your birthday gift haul? I do love those posts so much (this one was fun, though, and I love the pen pal posts…and….all the rest, haha!) ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜œ

    1. Aww, I’m SO glad to hear that, dear! Right now I’m working on some watercolor Bible verse cards for my Etsy shop! ๐Ÿ˜€ And I’m memorizing the book of Romans with my friend Aria. ๐Ÿ™‚ YES, I definitely plan to do a birthday post, although it might be next week. Ha ha, you’re so sweet. โค Thanks, Annie!

  2. I love to read these types of posts! ๐Ÿ˜› Honestly, I don’t have a routine of any shape, size, or form… I pretty much drag myself out of bed whenever I seem alive enough. It’s actually extremely inconvenient, because my days end up being a little chaotic! XD I am definitely, one hundred percent night owl. That is when I come up with amazing plot bunnies and stress over the fact that I’m probably never going to be able to write them because I have so many other things I’m writing at the moment LOL. ๐Ÿคฃ

    1. Me too! HAHA! XD That’s funny. I kind of have to give myself a routine or I’d go crazy! Yessss I feel you. Don’t you hate it (but also love it) when you’re in bed trying to go to sleep and a whole host of ideas pops into your head? I’m like, “WHY COULDN’T YOU WAIT TILL MORNING?” :’D

  3. A good write up Allison. Never heard a story from someone living on a farm who is tech savvy too..!!. Your life sounds to be peaceful, which is awesome and I wish it stays that way. BTW, what do you do with SO many pens on your desk? Also, the link to your shop site doesn’t work for some unknown reason. It says “etsy.thecolorboxstudio.com – Server IP address could not be found”.

    1. Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the post. My life is very peaceful overall, a fact for which I am ever so grateful. Ha ha, good observation! XD I don’t use ALL the pens on my desk, but I have several different kinds I like to use, like an erasable pen, a felt-tip pen, a white gel pen, and two normal pens. ๐Ÿ˜€ Oh, whoops! Thanks for telling me about the link – it should work now. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Ooh, these are so fun to read, and I loved reading your one! I am definitely not a morning person, I find it really hard to stay awake when the alarm goes off, I think that’s very due to the fact I can’t get to sleep until really late. Your Etsy shop looks so fun to run!! And I love your studio, it’s so simplistic yet really pretty, and you’ve kept it so tidy (I would fail at that)!! Also, I think it’s fine to have a not-so-big beauty routine!…makeup is just for bonus touches, but you look really pretty without it.
Also, A VERY VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!! โค

    1. Yay, thank you so much! Ha ha, SAME. I feel you. It IS fun to run! Aww, well thanks. โค Unfortunately it doesn't always look as tidy as it does in the picture, but I do try to keep it somewhat picked up because it annoys me to work in a cluttered space. ๐Ÿ˜› Hee hee, why thank you – aww, you're so sweet! And THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCHHHH.

    1. Thanks so much, Saege! I definitely want to continue to be an artist. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll possibly branch out in that career, though – maybe teaching art classes or something. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Great post, Allison! What did you think of the Iliad and the Odyssey? I had to read them for school this year, and although they weren’t my favorite, I feel like I learned a lot from them! (And by strange Greek plays, did you mean Oedipus Rex? I also had to read that this year and it was….interesting XD) Just curious! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you so much! I honestly did NOT like the Illiad – it was just repetitive, gory descriptions of people dying for the most part. The Odyssey was much more interesting and I admired the complicated plot, but some of the events were… heh heh, a little sketchy. Yes! I like being able to understand the references when people or other books talk about Nestor or Odysseus, etc. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And nope, I don’t think I read that play… It sounds interesting indeed. ๐Ÿ˜›

      1. I totally agree! The Iliad was OK, but the Odyssey involved much more adventure and suspense. Me, too! I find references to both those stories everywhere and its so cool that I know what they mean!

  6. Sounds like a good day to me. My mornings I wake up at 5:30, then head to work around 6 because I start work at 7. My job is administrative tasks so I work until 12 which is when I take my lunch break. Then at around 1 or so Iโ€™ll do some cleaning at my job so our office space stays nice and then I leave work at 3:30. Once Iโ€™m at home, I make sure our cats are fed and their litter box is clean. Then Iโ€™ll just do whatever I feel like doing until 6-6:30, which is when I like to shower. Then Iโ€™ll eat dinner and watch tv, get my lunch packed for work, and then go to sleep by 9-10 so that I can wake up the next day. Sometimes Iโ€™ll read when I get home from work or check my email, sometimes Iโ€™ll take a nap or play video games. It really depends on what I feel like doing when I get off from work.

    1. I forgot to add Iโ€™m more a night owl too. So on Friday and Saturday nights I typically go to sleep later unless I have something I have to wake up early to do the next day.

Ahem. This was such a neat post – I’ve been looking forward to it since you mentioned it in your letter! Your morning beauty routine is genius. O_O XD
I am 1000% night owl, as you probably knew. I have a similarly dazed expression when I get up. XD Last night I was in bed by midnight! *shocked gasp* BE AMAZED.
I loved all the photos in this post! I liked how you used all black-and-white. ๐Ÿ™‚

Heh heh, I knew. XD HA. WOW, CLARA. That's amazing. *applauds* XD And ahh, thanks so much! I decided to do b&w since the lighting was pretty bad in most photos. ๐Ÿ˜›

  8. I LOVE posts like this!! We are on our own for breakfast instead of lunch. ๐Ÿ˜› I am a morning person and a night owl. Which ends up meaning I stay up super late then am grumpy the next morning because I slept in. XD Your studio is so pretty! โค My day usually starts anywhere from 7:30-8:00, then I eat breakfast, if I have an animal chore that day that needs to be done in the morning, I do that. Then, I work at school until lunch, then I work at school all afternoon, then I go outside in the evening! ๐Ÿ˜€ I really enjoyed this post! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Ahh, yay! Right now I’m currently reading… um, quite a few. XD Let’s see. The City of God, by St. Augustine (that’s my hay book ๐Ÿ˜‰ ); And the Bride Wore Tulle, by Bekah O’Brien (a friend gave it to me for my birthday – I think her friend self published it!); The Treasure Principle, by Randy Alcorn; and I think that’s it for now. ๐Ÿ˜‰ What about you?

  9. I very much enjoyed reading this post! Your description of lunchtime is funny to me, just because it something that might happen to me when there isn’t much food around. I usually have enough to eat though. Do you ever make tuna salad? It’s one of my favorite things to eat for lunch, and it’s really easy to make. ๐Ÿ™‚ I guess some people wouldn’t consider me a morning person, since it’s hard for me to get up before 8:00 in the morning, but it seems like I am a morning person, since I consistently get up earlier than my younger sister, and when a couple of my older siblings are home, I generally get up earlier than they do. However, I’m not always one to get to bed very early, so I don’t really classify myself as a morning or night person. I like to wake up early and stay up late, which isn’t really the best. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Yay, I’m so glad to hear that! HA HA. XD My family thinks I’m strange for not sitting down or warming up my food, but yeah. XD Ooh yes, we do occasionally have tuna salad, which I like! But it takes, like 20 minutes to hardboil eggs, and I DON’T HAVE TIME. :’D Well of course I do, but I just don’t want to. ๐Ÿ˜› Heh heh, dear me. I like to wake up early-ish and stay up late-ish. XD
Thanks for the great comment, dear!

    1. Ha ha, I don’t know! For some reason I can think of things to say much easier when I’m writing or typing, especially when I’m just describing a picture or the story around it. But it takes practice! My old posts were extremely short and boring often. XD

I am a morning person and by the time children get up my half day is done ๐Ÿ˜‚
I love my quiet and long mornings.

  12. I do enjoy “a day in the life” posts. I used to be a night owl but I turned myself into a morning person. I was tired of having no energy during the day and not getting a lot done as a result. So, now I wake up at 5:45 to read my Bible and pray for an hour before I get out of bed to get dressed and go on a thirty-minute walk with my mom. After that, I get the first load of clothes (for a household of twelve, two parents and ten children) and then I eat breakfast around eight o’clock. I do drink a cup of ginger water right after waking up. By 8:50, I’m on my way to my job at a local museum. I go home for lunch most days at 12 and back to work by 1. I’m home a little after 5. Depending on the day, I will help give the kids baths (Thursday and Saturday), go to Bible Study (Wednesday), go to our family’s Jiu-Jitsu class (Tuesday) or make granola balls (Friday). I also do some exercising at home between bathing children and eating supper. Then, it’s time for a little reading in bed (usually my Bible) before lights out.
